Barça beaten by towering Torres
Sunday, 6 February 2005
By Andy Hall

Fernando Torres scored at the start and finish of Sunday night's match at Camp Nou to give Club Atlético de Madrid a 2-0 victory against FC Barcelona and open up the Spanish title race.

Sprint start
With Real Madrid CF winning 4-0 against Barça's city rivals RCD Espanyol 24 hours earlier, the league leaders entered the game with their advantage reduced to four points. Any hopes of achieving a larger cushion were hit inside 40 seconds, when Torres collected a pass and drilled a low shot past Víctor Valdés.

Penalty miss
The Catalan side fought back but found the visiting defence in superlative form and it was not until midway through the second period that they created their first real opening. The otherwise outstanding Luis Perea tripped Samuel Eto'o in the area to give Ronaldinho the chance of an equaliser, but the Brazilian sent his penalty just wide of the left-hand post.

Late chance
Atlético made no such mistake when handed a similar opportunity at the other end four minutes into added time, Torres picking himself up from Valdés's foul and beating the goalkeeper convincingly to make it 2-0.
